The work

Brands built from the name up, a music partnership that took retail customers backstage, and four websites designed and built end to end. Some of it was done in-house as a marketing leader, some through Leo Lux; each story says which.

“The impossible often has a kind of integrity to it which the merely improbable lacks.”

Redwood Mushroom Supply

A brand built from nothing to more than 150 retail accounts in two years.

A horticulture distributor needed a growth path in a down market. Market research pointed at mushroom cultivation, a growing category nobody in the channel owned. Luke made the case and built the brand from the name up: identity, positioning, packaging, website, and go-to-market.

Distribution went from zero to more than 150 retail accounts in two years across independents, specialty stores, and regional chains, alongside a direct-to-consumer site with subscription and loyalty programs, and wholesale accounts with farms. The team ran email, paid, and ecommerce in-house and earned top-page search rankings for key terms within 18 months.

Mushroom cultivation is technical and the customers weren't. The brand won by turning cultivation science into plain language and backing it with education materials retailers actually used.

General Hydroponics and the Ineffable program

A brand partnership that took retail customers backstage.

Seven years at a hydroponics company, from territory sales rep to marketing director, through its acquisition by Scotts Miracle-Gro. The job was translating plant biology and chemistry, worked out with the company's own formulation scientists, into marketing that was accurate and easy to read.

The signature program was a five-year sponsorship with an artist management company that gave the brand a roster of touring musicians: private performances for key retail accounts, backstage access for customers at shows nationwide, and branded albums that are still on Spotify. It replaced more expensive festival sponsorships with better access, and built loyalty that lasted years.

The bigger win was cultural: plant food is about as unglamorous as a product gets, and the brand became part of how its customers saw themselves, something people wore on their shirts and hats and showed off at shows. Also from those years: the launch of Rapid Start, the company's fastest product to a million dollars in sales; packaging and labels adapted across EU markets with the company's French team; and a sales team that grew from three to twelve while Luke moved from the road to running national marketing.

Websites

Four sites, from the brief to the launch.

ethanminor.com

Leo Lux

A personal site for a friend with a lot of interests and no patience for templates. It says who he is in one screen and hides a few game-themed details for people who poke around. Personality is a feature.

leoluxesthetics.com

Leo Lux

A therapeutic esthetics and wellness practice in Sonoma County: facials, facial sculpting, lymphatic drainage, and Human Design readings, offered to a deliberately small number of clients each week at two partner studios. The site had to feel as calm as the treatment room and carry a brand suite that works on social too. Name, identity, site, and social workflows, built as one piece.
